この本は最初、「分厚っ！」と感じるかもしれないが、各章の文章は数行で、短文が多く、簡単なため、さくっと読める。ただし、Newbery Medal Award（アメリカにおける最も優れた児童書に与えられる賞）を受賞しているだけあって、児童書にしては難しい。抽象的な表現も多いため、しっかりと行間を読んで、想像力を働かさなければならない。
面白さ
数多くの児童書を読んできてたが、その中でも個人的にすごいと思う一冊。ほとんど本を読み返さない自分が、何回も読み返してしまう。
主人公であるIvan（ゴリラ）が綴った日記風な本は、シンプルだが深い文章で構成されている。深すぎるが故に、児童が理解しきれるのか疑問。重いテーマにも関わらず、心温まる瞬間や成長が描かれ、深い感動を与える。大人でも十分に楽しめる感動的な本である。

Humans have so many words, more than they truly need.

人間（Mack夫妻）に飼われ、幼少期から人間のように育てられてきた。それにより、ゴリラとしてのアイデンティティを失い、自分がなんなのか分からなくなっている。
